Trying to Understand Chlorine for Residential Swimming Pools?
Question?
Q: I ran into a bit of a bump and need some help. I have a pool service company taking care of my pool needs; nevertheless, I am curious, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask you a pool question. What is chlorine? That is all I can tell you.
Have a good day.

A:
Thanks ahead for a good question. Chlorine is a very efficient disinfectant that kills bacteria. It is very important for swimmers safety. The majority of all pools use some form of chlorinating products as a sanitizer or as a pool water shock. Bacteria and algae enter the pool on a daily basis from sources ranging from bathers to the weather.
When we test for chlorine in pool water, we are actually looking for free available chlorine, meaning that it is free and available to kill bacteria. Chlorine is found in the ocean in is natural form and is derived from salt. The bleach you buy to use as a household cleaner is also chlorine, just in a diluted form. That should help you.
It is great to bounce questions to us, as it helps our community knowledge.
