Go to your local pool supplier or online store and buy water treatment enzymes. Let the cartridge sit in this solution for at least two days and then backwash the filter with plenty of water pressure. Wait until the cartridge dries totally and hit it against the pavement to lose the accumulated-over-time sand. This treatment can give your filter a couple of years more of life.
